BALHAM PERGOLA WALKWAY: A MODERN NOCTURNAL SANCTUARY
DESIGN & BUILD BY STUART SAVAGE LANDSCAPING
Completed in Summer 2025, this project at Boundaries Road, Balham, represents a high-impact structural renovation. By clearing a neglected urban plot and installing a custom ModBlox Cube Walkway, Stuart Savage Landscaping created a private, architectural corridor that transitions into a low-maintenance social space.
STRUCTURAL INNOVATION & SPATIAL DESIGN
The primary objective was a complete site "rip out" to facilitate a modern, zoned layout. The design utilises a 9-meter-long pergola walkway to provide both a sense of journey and essential privacy from neighbouring properties.
THE MAINTENANCE-FREE LAWN
To provide a lush, year-round green space, we integrated a high-performance artificial lawn area (4m x 4.75m).

THE MODBLOX CUBE WALKWAY & PRIVACY FEATURES
Discover this stunning Balham garden transformation featuring a 9m ModBlox pergola walkway, Raj Green sandstone paving, and premium artificial grass by Stuart Savage.
CUSTOM PERGOLA
We constructed a bespoke Cube Walkway (2m x 9m x 1.8m) using the ModBlox system, featuring a slatted privacy roof and sides for a contemporary look.
DOUBLE-SLATTED FENCING
The perimeter was secured with 1.8m pressure-treated green double-slatted trellis panels, ensuring 100% privacy without sacrificing natural light.
NOCTURNAL GLOW
Integrated festoon lighting and lanterns transform the walkway into a cinematic tunnel after dark, in line with our "Nocturnal Sanctuary" philosophy.
HIGH-END HARDSCAPING & SEAMLESS UTILITY
RAJ GREEN SANDSTONE
We installed 24.84m² of Raj Green Indian Sandstone (600mm x 600mm) from London Stone.
PRECISION ENGINEERING
The patio includes a new recessed maintenance hole cover and rainwater gully, ensuring all utility features are hidden beneath the stone's natural texture.
SLEEPERS & PLANTERS
A 2.8m long raised bed planter was constructed from heavy-duty sleepers to house established climbing plants and fresh compost.
PROFESSIONAL GRASS INSTALLATION
Preparation: The area was excavated to 150mm and backfilled with compacted building sand and hardcore to ensure a perfectly level finish with the sandstone patio.
PREMIUM TEXTURE: We selected Preston 40mm artificial grass for its realistic pile height and durability under heavy foot traffic.
WEED PROTECTION: A heavy-duty weed membrane was installed beneath the grass to prevent any unwanted growth through the surface.
