This comprehensive project showcases the high-end transformation of a residential outdoor space in Dulwich, South London, into a premier "nocturnal sanctuary". By blending structural masonry with innovative lighting, Stuart Savage Landscaping created a multi-level environment designed for luxury evening entertaining.
THE VISION FOR A CINEMATIC OUTDOOR SPACE
The client approached us with a need to revitalise a dated, underutilised plot into a sophisticated garden that functioned as a seamless extension of their home. The primary design goal was to develop a Nocturnal Sanctuary—a space specifically engineered to look its best under moonlight and artificial light.

Reclaimed brick retaining walls echo Dulwich’s period architecture, creating tiered dining and social zones while managing the garden’s elevation. Durable sandstone paving provides a textured, timeless foundation.
BESPOKE LIGHTING & PRIVACY SCREENING
A low-voltage LED system is built into the brickwork, with recessed step lights for safety and ambience. Double-slatted timber fencing delivers full privacy without feeling enclosed, while up-lighting to Betula utilis (Silver Birch) trees adds dramatic night-time depth.
MULTI-ZONED SOCIAL DESIGN
3D Cinematic Planning maximises every square metre. The lower terrace, anchored by a timber dining suite and wall lighting, forms the main entertaining hub.
UPPER LOUNGE & FIRE PIT
Above, a lawn framed by architectural planting centres around a fire pit, shifting from a relaxed family space by day to an evening social lounge.
THE SOFTSCAPING PALETTE
Planting delivers year-round structure and sensory interest. Hydrangea, Lavender and Alliums provide purple and white tones that glow under evening light, while ornamental grasses and ferns add movement and a serene, sanctuary feel.
