This comprehensive project showcases the high-end transformation of a residential outdoor space in Dulwich, South London, into a premier "nocturnal sanctuary". By blending structural masonry with innovative lighting, Stuart Savage Landscaping created a multi-level environment designed for luxury evening entertaining.
THE VISION FOR A CINEMATIC OUTDOOR SPACE
The client approached us with a need to revitalise a dated, underutilised plot into a sophisticated garden that functioned as a seamless extension of their home. The primary design goal was to develop a Nocturnal Sanctuary—a space specifically engineered to look its best under moonlight and artificial light.

STRUCTURAL MASONRY AND HERITAGE MATERIALS
We utilised reclaimed brick for all retaining walls to ensure the new structural elements harmonised with the period architecture of Dulwich.
These tiered walls allowed us to create distinct dining and socialising zones while managing the garden's natural elevation.
The foundation features high-quality sandstone paving, selected for its natural texture and durability.
BESPOKE LIGHTING AND PRIVACY SCREENING
A complex, low-voltage LED system was integrated directly into the brickwork, featuring recessed step lights that enhance both safety and ambience.
We installed contemporary double-slatted timber fencing to provide 100% privacy without making the space feel enclosed or dark.
Strategic up-lighting was applied to the Betula utilis (Silver Birch) trees to create architectural shadows and depth after sunset.
MULTI-ZONED SOCIAL DESIGN
Our 3D Cinematic Planning allowed us to optimise every square meter of the garden for functionality.
Formal Dining Terrace
The lower terrace is anchored by a large timber dining suite, positioned to take advantage of the integrated wall lighting.
This area acts as the primary hosting hub, providing a stable, level surface for formal outdoor meals.
THE UPPER SOCIAL LOUNGE AND FIRE PIT
The upper level features a lush lawn area framed by architectural planting and a central fire pit.
This zone transitions effortlessly from a family relaxation area during the day to a social lounge in the evening.
THE SOFTSCAPING PALETTE
The planting scheme was meticulously chosen to provide sensory interest and year-round structure.
Key Planting: We integrated Hydrangea, Lavender, and Alliums to provide vibrant purple and white tones that "glow" under evening lighting.
Texture and Movement: Ornamental grasses and ferns were incorporated to create a sense of movement in the breeze, thereby enhancing the sanctuary's serene atmosphere.
